Predictors of psychological distress in breast cancer patients after surgery

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between psychological distress and patient psychological traits (i.e., trait anxiety, life change events, and emotional suppression) in breast cancer patients after surgery. Methods: A total of 33 breast cancer patients enrolled in this study completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Life Experiences Survey, and the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale at their first visit and the Profile of Mood States after surgery. Results: Trait anxiety, life change events, and emotional suppression, measured from the first visit were positively associated with psychological distress and predictors of psychological distress. Conclusions: Trait anxiety, life change events, especially those perceived negatively, and emotional suppression were potential risk factors for psychological distress in patients with breast cancer after surgery.
